Financial and Mortgage Services Industry Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Financial and Mortgage Services Industry - Essay Example Furthermore it will give us an external environment overview of the strategic tools used to understand market growth or decline, business position, potential and direction for operations. The Basel II Regulations are expected to reshape the entire financial services industry by creating new classes of competitors based on their risk-measurement and value-measurement technologies. These guidelines pose serious threats to both real estate lending by commercial banks and the viability of the entire industry since higher capital charges could reduce available capital for commercial real estate. [5] Sarbanes-Oxley developed a private, nonprofit corporation, to ensure that financial statements are audited according to independent standards. It also holds chief executives and chief financial officers directly responsible for the accuracy of financial statements. The law seeks to rule out conflicts that would make securities analysts less than objective and gives board audit committees rather than CEOs or chief financial officers full control of auditors. [3] The new regulations for mutual funds to have 75% independents in the board of directors and have an independent mutual fund chairman of the board represent one of the most drastic changes. These rules will require the search and hiring of new members to meet the regulations as a result, a shortage of potential candidates may be experienced. These regulations can be good or bad for a company depending on the quality of decisions taken at the time of appointing new directors and chairperson. [7] Hedge Funds Regulations With the increasing growth of hedge funds in the market, the regulations to monitor them are becoming more practical in the near future. [6] Regulations for New Entrants Some regulations regarding the minimum capital requirements for a company act as a barrier to new firms trying to enter the industry. Along with this investment and technological input costs are difficult to meet for these new entrants. [6] Economic Forces Federal Interest Rate Hikes The changing of the fund rate has the most impact on short-term rates. The raising or lowering of this rate will affect interest rates on mortgages, credit cards, and home equity lines of credit. When the target rate is raised, consumers pay more interest. When the rate is lowered, they pay less. These rate hikes will also affect credit cards since credit card interest rates are tied to the prime rate, which is subject to the actions of the Fed. As the rate increases tend move slowly to credit cards because issuers re-price cards once a quarter, the rate increase will be seen in the near future. [8] Declining Personal Savings Rate In September 2005, the personal saving rate as a percentage of disposable income was negative implying US consumers spent more than 100% of their monthly post-tax income. This decline in savings can be bad for the economy as there will be lesser investment and the financial sector can suffer. [4] Compliance Costs for Small Firms U.S. businesses

The Blakes, Lest We Forget and The Golden Light by Michael Nesmith

The Blakes, Lest We Forget and The Golden Light by Michael NesmithRecently, I was reading some recent editions of the popular American Academy of Religion, when I came across a new edition of the celebrated anti-nuclear activist, and journalist, Steven Barrett's book, The Blakes, Lest We Forget. The main point of contention on my part was his assertion that the American writer Steven Zinni, previously unknown to most Americans, had built his literary career from right here in Missouri.A quick look at Steve Zinni's Wikipedia article, however, revealed his link to one of the greatest American writers of our time: Steven Barrett. On reading this intriguing connection, I finally decided to visit Steve Zinni's biography page to see if there was some truth to his claim that the origin of his success lies in the wonderful state of Missouri. To my surprise, I found that he was also based in California, where he went to college, and was awarded his master's degree in English, teaching poetry. Not only was this astonishing information, but it is also highly significant in the context of my recent discussion of the great works of my mother's husband, the author Michael Nesmith Smith. One wonderswhat exactly had the writer Michael Nesmith was doing in the land of Mary Baker Eddy, but I will try to explore some of these questions, in my next article. Until then, allow me to mention a few more things about the foundational literary writer of the present day:When I began thinking about the influence of The Blakes, Lest We Forget on my mother's work, I discovered an excellent example of how I am a product of her faith, as well as her years of artistic inspiration. As I read this new edition of Steve Zinni's book, I found that one of the main characters in this novel, David O'Hara, was the son of one of the principal character in Mary Baker Eddy's famous book, The Story of Mary Baker Eddy, which details the lives of her contemporaries and other family members, during the period of their lifetime. With The Story of Mary Baker Eddy, the author of The Blakes, Lest We Forget is no longer able to trace his lines of influence from his country of birth, and so my family tree is now much different than it would have been, had he been in the country of his own birth. More importantly, however, I must point out that The Story of Mary Baker Eddy did not just create The Blakes, Lest We Forget.Indeed, the Blakes, Lest We Forget is a literary legacy which bears strong similarities to another great work of a New England family history, The Golden Light. In addition to serving as a bridge to both The Blakes, Lest We Forget and The Golden Light, it also bears witness to the author's friendship with the poet John Stephen Oates, and to the literary pedigree of its author, Michael Nesmith. In fact, The Golden Light and The Blakes, Lest We Forget are the two best selling books in the history of the family history publishing company, National Geographic Books. For many years, my mother and I were fortunate enough to have been able to enjoy several of the best family history books in the history of the publishing world, and so I can honestly say that the best of the best books on the family history scene today, are those which draw their inspiration from The Golden Light and The Blakes, Lest We Forget. Now, let us all enjoy the legacy of both Michael Nesmith and The Golden Light, together!

Evolution of the genus homo Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Evolution of the genus homo - Research Paper Example The Australopithecines were the earliest known bipedal hominid species descending from the apes, the latter using all four limbs for locomotion, like the other animal species’ of today. The Australopithecines were anatomically more related to the extant apes in terms of brain size, possessed large postcanine teeth and employed mixed climbing with bipedalism for locomotion (Wood, 1992). The Homo habilis species has been supposed to succeed the Australopithecines in the evolutionary ladder followed by Homo erectus and the Homo sapiens (Wood, 1992). Fossil discovery and characterization has created some debate about the existence of the Homo habilis species as an intermediate species between the Australopithecines and the Homo erectus, but there is a consensus that the Homo erectus was the most primitive of the species from which the present day humans evolved. There are two distinct and contrasting views for the evolutionary ladder which the modern day Homo sapiens followed. The first suggests that the present day populations were derived as a result of in situ evolution from the Homo erectus species which was dispersed worldwide from the East African continent during the Lower Pleistocene (Finlayson, 2005). According to the other viewpoint, all present day populations of human species are the descended from a recent common ancestor who lived in East Africa 150,000 years ago and these descendants have replaced all regional populations, if they ever existed (Finlayson, 2005). The latter view is now accepted and has been labeled as the ‘Out-of-Africa-2’ viewpoint. According to its claims, the biologically superior humans that persist till now replaced all other homo species’ and their geographical spread was driven by climatic and ecological factors (Finlayson, 2005). The recent discovery of a hominid species in Indonesia, which has been given the nomenclature Homo floresiensis, whose existence is under active debate has confounded many a nthropologists with one opinion suggesting that the species may have evolved from an early migration of the Homo erectus which was dwarfed due to peculiar ecological factors in the region (Finlayson, 2005). The features which characterized the evolution of the Homo species to the present generation of humans are a larger relative brain size, larger body, a slower rate of growth and maturation of the body, bipedal mode of locomotion and smaller teeth and jaws facilitating lesser masticator effort as compared to the primitive species of Australopithecines and Paranthropines (Aiello & Wells, 2002). Historically, the migration of the Homo erectus occurred from Africa to the Eurasian and Asian continents from which the genus spread to all geographical regions of the world. The species evolved into the primitive ‘Neanderthal’ man which was very similar to modern humans except for the larger body size and an extremely protruding mid facial anatomy (Web, undated). The Neanderth al man can be traced to 250,00 years ago which is a relatively short period as compared to the overall time span associated with the evolution of the genus. The discovery and employment of stones, sticks as primitive tools was a cultural revolution which was not confined to the latter species as some evidence of their use in the Pliocene and the Pleistocene eras by the Australopithecines and Paranthropines also exists.
